The steel guage is heavy enough to... See more The box itself is a de facto design used by countless manufacturers. What sets this one apart is the "knockout" is anything but. You CANNOT get the connector hole to come apart no matter what you try short of a dremmel and a grinding bit. The steel guage is heavy enough to make it very frustrating. I spent close to an hour trying to cut and drill the hole for the 3/4 connector. And even after all was said and done I basically butchered the damned thing.
To make matters worse, the plug is just poorly designed. If you ever worked with 6 gauge wire you know how difficult it is to manipulate. Instead of having the clamp style ports, this thing has the center stud type. What''s the difference? Clamp style the screw is off to the side and you simply strip the wire, put it in place and turn the screw to clamp it. This thing you have to "split" the strands and hope the screw holds it. Well newsflash...it doesn''t. I went out and purchased a different plug. It was a world of difference. Proper and secure design courtesy of Lenovo.
Hey...the box is a nice green color. Which is why I ever purchased it. It was to hook up a Tesla yo a 50A plug outside. That''s about all I can say was good about it. The real issue is trying to insert wires. The instructions indicate the plug accepts wire as large as #4 wire. However, I quickly discovered the wire clamps have bolts in the middle, making it impossible to insert the wire. I needed to insert #6 but gave up after two hours. The only way to get the wire to fit was to cut away half the wire thickness. After a few tries with a screw driver and hammer, all I did was bend the metal. Then I thought I would drill some tap holes and the rings would give way. Nope. Nothing would tap out the knockouts. They were just not stamped correctly. This was 100% a fail on the presses making knock outs. It''s a shame too, because otherwise its a great box. I like the little ball bearing latch. It was pretty. The plug was good, but not excelent, however it locked down tight. The only real problem is that you have to make your own hole. After I went at it with a uni-bit, it was fine, but frustrating in that I had to make an additional trip out to the site to complete the job. The bottom line: if you know how to use a uni-bit or better yet you have a knockout kit, get this box. It''s a great value if you only have one or two to install. If you have 50 to install? Go with another box.

I will say I never reached out to the supplier because I didn''t have time. Maybe they would have sent me another and it would have been perfect, but I didn''t have time for that. I had to get the job done. So one or two, buy it. If you need 50+, you are going to be pissed off. The 14-50R should easily accept a 6 gauge wire but with the design you must split the wire for the terminal to accept it. I could not get the terminal screw tight enough to hold the wire even with minimal traction on the wire. The knockouts could be very difficult to remove as well. The company recommends a purchase of an extraction tool. The tool should not be necessary as these are "stamp pressed" at construction and a little more PSI would work better. I used a metal hole saw to make the hole for the conduit. I would recommend that if you purchase this Power Outlet Box you buy a Leviton 14-50R and throw away the included one,,, or buy one at your local store and paint it yourself and save the hassle.
